French Riviera presents Entre Amis Trois, our first online exhibition, bringing together ten international artists working in painting, collage and photography. The third in a series of December exhibitions curated by French Riviera, Entre Amis translates as ‘Between Friends’, a title that conjures new images in our current climate where meeting in person is not as straightforward as it once was.
The works in Entre Amis Trois are intimate in nature in terms of scale, materiality and subject matter; domestic still lifes, faces and friendships, and imaginings of distant lands with dreamlike scenes excavated from our collective memory in an era of curtailed travel. What may be perceived as creative limitations can also provide opportunities, allowing us time to re-engage with our art practice and consider ideas anew, as we experience a vital need to reach out and strengthen our connections with one another.

Edition size 15
Launch Price £280 incl. VAT
To mark the occasion of new permanent artworks at Blackhorse Road, Victoria and Vauxhall Underground stations, Design Work Leisure (DWL) has created three special editions.
Produced at Craven Dunnill Jackfield in Telford, the heart of ceramic production in Industrial Revolution Britain, each tile has been screen-printed by hand. The 150 x 150mm tiles are suitable for interior domestic application and are accompanied by a guide illustrating possible layouts for assembling the tiles in your home. The different designs based on the Blackhorse Road, Victoria and Vauxhall artworks, are each available as an edition of 15. Every set contains 24 tiles bespoke to the permanent works and comes with a stamped certificate and special instruction booklet.
Design Work Leisure (DWL) is a design office established by artist Giles Round in 2015 as part of Underline a series of art commissions for the Victoria line. DWL revisits the values and vision of Arts & Crafts exponent William Morris who believed that great art should be for everybody. The project also celebrates the legacy of Frank Pick, managing director of London Underground in the early 20th century who commissioned much of London Underground’s iconic design including the Johnston typeface and Harry Beck’s Tube map.

Emalin, Booth B06, Contemporary Established and On Demand Section, MiArt, Milan
Booth concept by Giles Round featuring works by Nicholas Cheveldave, Athena Papadopoulos, Kembra Pfahler, Megan Plunkett and Giles Round
12 April – 15 April 2018
For the gallery‘s 2018 participation in MiArt, Emalin collaborated with British artist Giles Round (b.1976) to create a quintessentially Milanese backdrop for the group presentation of gallery artists. Round draws on the the work of Italian architect Aldo Rossi – in particular his Monumento a Sandro Pertini (1988-90) in Milan – to fashion a mise en scène for his own sculptures as well as works by Kembra Pfahler, Nicholas Cheveldave, Megan Plunkett and Athena Papadopoulos
A marbled wallpaper grounds the works on display, recalling the marble flooring often encountered in cemeteries or Milanese butcher shops. At the centre of the booth, Rossi‘s postmodernist monument is transfigured into minimalist furniture and a cotton throw. Isamu Noguchi’s cult light design finds itself illuminated for a new age. Throughout his practice, Round situates craft and design firmly within the fine arts context in an attempt to collapse the hierarchies that favour fine above applied arts. Interior aesthetics contend with cheeky overtones in the resultant objects. The belief that design and architecture play a critical role in the cultivation of wellbeing informs Round’s practice, resulting in immersive and thought-provoking viewer experiences.

DESIGN WORK LEISURE
DESIGN WORK LEISURE, Giles Round, 2015
Press Release: Design Work Leisure (DWL) is a design office established by artist Giles Round in 2015. DWL revisits the values and vision of Arts & Crafts exponent William Morris who believed that great art should be for everybody. The project also celebrates the legacy of Frank Pick, managing director of London Underground in the early 20th century who commissioned many of the great design tropes of London Underground including the Johnston typeface and Harry Beck’s Tube map.
DWL further visits the vision of the Design Research Unit responsible for the original Victoria line aesthetic when the line was built in the 1960s. Part research facility and part lobby for change, Design Work Leisure aims to place functional objects into the Victoria line network.
Drawing on the belief that good design leads to a better society, Round’s office launched with a design directive for the Victoria line. Distributed for free in every Underground station, the Directive outlines DWL’s design aims and objectives for producing functional yet quality crafted objects for use in the network. Over the 12-month period of the project, Design Work Leisure builds on London Underground’s rich design heritage to devise, research and develop bespoke products for the physical environment of the network, for staff and passengers to enjoy.
The prototypes will be proposed to London Underground for real use on the network for example a new design for a station tile, a platform clock or staff cutlery. Where possible the designs will be rolled out for use in stations and staff spaces. Design Work Leisure’s objects utilise historical models of production, working with London Underground manufacturers. In doing so the project provides a critical lens to examine contemporary aesthetics and the hierarchies between applied and fine arts.
